The Epithelium 1

  AD

        THE EPITHELIAL TISSUE
                            Part one
here are  four basic types of tissue in the human body namely;
  • Epithelial
  • Muscular
  • Nervous and
  • Connective tissues
The epithelium is a tissue composed of one or more layer(s) of cells found lining basically the;
  • Lumen of tubular structures
  • Outer surface of the body
  • Cavities of the body

      Types of the epithelial tissue
The criterias  for classifying the various types of the epithelium could be based on the;
  • Number of layers
  • Shape of the constituent cells
  • Surface specialization
Based on the number of layers of cells constituting the epithelium, we have identified three basic types;
  1. Simple (unilayered) epithelium
  2. Stratified(multilayered/bilayered) epithelium
  3. Pseudostratified (unilayered) epithelium
Based on the shape of the cells constituting an epithelium, it is key to note that the shape of the cells of the most superficial layer of a stratified epithelium is used to name the tissue in general.
  1. Squamous(simple/stratified)epithelium
  2. Cuboidal(simple/stratified) epithelium
  3. Columnar (simple/stratified)epithelium
  4. Transitional epithelium
Based on the surface specialization of the most superficial layer of the stratified epithelium, we have identified four types;
  1. Ciliated epithelium
  2. Flagellated epithelium
  3. Stereociliated epithelium
  4. Epithelium with microvilli
